The real question isn’t whether to fix it. It’s what kind of fix the damage actually calls for, because sealing a moving crack and patching a failed base are two completely different jobs. Here’s how to read what your driveway is telling you before anyone shows up with a caulk gun.
What a Crack in a Pittsburgh Driveway Is Actually Telling You
Concrete looks solid, but it’s porous. Water works into the pores and hairline openings, settles in, and when the temperature drops it expands by roughly nine percent, pushing outward from inside the slab.
Salt turns a slow problem into a fast one. Deicing salt lowers the freezing point of water, so instead of one clean freeze in January your driveway cycles between frozen and thawed over and over. More cycles mean more pressure, and by March that hairline is a gap.
One distinction matters more than any other: is the trouble in the top layer, or in the ground underneath? Surface damage stays shallow and behaves predictably. Base failure keeps returning no matter what you pour into the opening.
Five Kinds of Driveway Cracks, and What Each One Needs
Not every crack carries the same weight. Some are cosmetic and always will be, and some are the visible edge of a problem that started below the slab years ago.
Before anyone talks about products or methods, the crack needs a name. Here’s what we look for.
Hairline and Shrinkage Cracks
These are the thin, wandering lines that show up in the first year or two after a pour. Concrete gives off moisture as it cures and shrinks slightly while doing it, and thin cracks are how it relieves that tension.
On their own they’re harmless. Left open through a few Pittsburgh winters, they stop being harmless, because they’re wide enough to let water reach the reinforcement and the base.
Control Joint and Expansion Joint Separation
Those straight grooves cut into your slab aren’t decoration. They’re control joints, placed to tell the concrete where to crack so it doesn’t choose for itself.
When the sealant in those joints dries out, shrinks, or pulls loose from the edges, the joint turns into an open channel running straight down to the base course. Re-sealing joints is one of the least glamorous and most useful repairs on any driveway.
Settlement Cracks and Sunken Sections
If one side of a crack sits lower than the other, the slab isn’t the problem. The ground beneath it is. Soil washed out, a void opened up, and the concrete broke because it lost its support.
Filling that crack without addressing the void underneath just buys a season. The slab needs to be brought back to level first, which is where concrete leveling comes in, and the crack gets sealed afterward.
Alligator and Map Cracking
This is the tight, interconnected web that looks a bit like reptile skin or a road map. It shows up when the base beneath the surface has failed across a broad area rather than at one point.

Spalling, Scaling, and Pitting
Spalling is when the top layer flakes, chips, and peels away, leaving a rough, pockmarked surface. It’s the signature of salt combined with freeze-thaw, and it usually appears first near the street and around the garage where deicer gets tracked and piled.
Pitting and scaling belong to the same family. The slab underneath is often perfectly sound, which makes this a surface repair rather than a structural one.
Why Pittsburgh Ground Makes Cracks Worse Than They Should Be
Climate gets most of the blame around here, and it earns it. But the ground your driveway sits on plays just as large a role, and it varies enormously from one part of Allegheny County to the next.

- Undermined ground. Plenty of boroughs in this county sit above old mine workings, and slow settlement above them shows up in driveways long before anyone notices it anywhere else.
- Older slabs poured thin, without rebar or wire mesh, and set on a base that was never properly compacted. Very common on homes built before the 1970s.
- Downspouts and grading that dump roof water beside the slab instead of away from it. This is the single most overlooked cause we find.

Concrete repair only works when the method matches the damage. Same crack width can call for two different approaches depending on whether the slab is moving and how deep the opening runs.
Crack Routing and Sealing
We widen and clean the crack with a chasing blade first. That sounds backwards, but a raw crack has dusty, irregular faces that no sealant can grip.
Routing creates a clean channel with real bonding surface. Backer rod goes in to control depth, then a flexible sealant that stretches and compresses as the slab moves through the seasons.
Structural Crack Repair
When a crack runs the full thickness of the slab and the two sides are still tied together, the goal shifts from sealing to bonding. A low-viscosity injection material is worked into the opening so it fills the void rather than just bridging the top.
Done right, the repaired section carries load again instead of acting like a hinge.
Partial Slab and Section Replacement
Sometimes one panel is finished while the rest of the driveway has years left. Cutting joint to joint lets us remove and re-pour only the failed section, with the base rebuilt and compacted underneath.

When a section is both cracked and sitting low, sealing it first is the wrong order. The void gets filled and the slab gets lifted back to grade, and only then does the crack get sealed.
Reverse those steps and the sealant tears the first time the slab moves.
Asphalt Driveways: What’s Different
Asphalt fails in its own way. It oxidizes, loses its binder, and starts shedding aggregate long before it cracks all the way through, so the repair calendar looks different from concrete.
Crack Filling
Asphalt cracks get a hot-pour rubberized filler that flows into the opening and stays flexible in cold weather. Cold-pour products from the hardware store shrink as they cure and typically open back up within a season.
Pothole and Edge Patching

Sealcoating Comes After Repair, Not Before
This trips people up constantly. Sealcoat is a thin protective film, not a filler, and spraying it over open cracks hides the problem for about a month.
Cracks get filled and cured first. Sealcoat goes on last, and it protects the repair instead of covering it up.
Crack Sealing, Crack Filling, and Surface Repair Are Not the Same Thing

Rethink your deicer, too. Rock salt is the harshest thing you can put on concrete, and calcium chloride or calcium magnesium acetate are noticeably gentler on the surface. Can a cracked driveway be repaired, or does it always need replacing?
Most cracked driveways can be repaired. Replacement becomes the right answer when the base has failed across a wide area, when cracking is interconnected and spreading, or when large sections have dropped and broken apart. Isolated cracks on a sound slab are repair territory.
