The old slab comes out, with clean saw cuts anywhere it meets your garage floor, apron, or sidewalk. The broken concrete leaves your property the same day it comes up — it does not sit in a pile on your lawn, and recyclable material goes to a recycling yard rather than a landfill.
Excavation and base rebuild.
We dig past the old slab into any soft or saturated soil below it, then bring the grade back up with crushed limestone placed in lifts and compacted with a plate compactor or roller. This is the step that gets skipped most often on cheap bids, and it is the single biggest reason a driveway either lasts or fails early.
Reinforcement, pour, and joints.
Rebar or wire mesh goes in on chairs so the steel sits inside the slab instead of resting on the stone. We pour an air-entrained mix, screed and float it, tool the edges, and finish with a broom texture for grip. Control joints are laid out before the pour, an isolation joint separates the slab from your garage and foundation, and curing compound goes down so the concrete gains strength the way it is supposed to.

Western Pennsylvania runs through well over a hundred freeze-thaw cycles in a single season. Water works into a hairline crack, freezes, expands, and widens it. The next thaw lets in more water than the last one did, and the cycle compounds itself all winter.

What Replacement Week Looks Like On Your Property
Most residential jobs move faster than people expect. Demo and haul-off usually take the first day, and your driveway is completely clear by that evening.
Excavation, grade work, and base stone follow, with compaction done in layers rather than all at once. Forms, reinforcement, the pour, finishing, and joint cutting typically wrap up over the next day or two, depending on the size of the slab and the weather.
The waiting is the part worth planning around. You can walk on it after about two days, staying off the edges. Cars can come back on at roughly a week. Anything heavy — an RV, a moving truck, a loaded dumpster — should wait the full 28 days. New concrete earns its lifespan in the first year. Keep deicing salt off it through that first winter and use sand for traction instead — the surface chemistry is still maturing, and chlorides do the most damage early.
After that, the maintenance list is short. Seal it on a sensible interval, keep the control joints clear of packed debris, run downspouts away from the slab, and use a plastic-edged blade when you plow or shovel.
One last thing worth knowing: hairline cracks that show up inside the control joints are not a defect. Those joints exist to tell the concrete where to crack, and a slab cracking exactly where it was told to is a slab doing its job.
Common Questions About Driveway Replacement
Do I have to replace the whole driveway, or can you do just the bad section?
Partial replacement works when the failure is contained and the rest of the base is sound. If the good sections are the same age and thickness, they are usually next in line anyway.
Can you take out asphalt and replace it with concrete?
Yes. The asphalt and the base beneath it come out, and we rebuild the sub-base to suit a concrete slab, since the two materials want different support.
